Excuse the potato picture in a tunnel. I was behind this guy riding like this for about 5 miles this past weekend. No real traffic to speak of or any need to look over a car in front , just felt like riding standing up for a while, I guess. I was impressed with how much he leaned in corners despite being so high out of his seat. So...why?

Maybe his butt was sore?

I’d stand on my F650GS all the time. ADV bikes usually have a much better position for standing, keeps the blood flowing to stand every so often, gets some good airflow, changing up seating position, etc etc. Same reason you shuffle around in the driver’s seat on a long road trip?

I stretch in my car as much a s possible on a long drive.

I would imagine you also get a better view of the road ahead.

On a motorcycle, because of the vinyl seats, you have to stand up to fart.. Perhaps he was just coming from a mexican restaurant.. I hope your windows weren’t open.

And regarding the leaning while standing — when you’re on your foot pegs (versus weight on the seat) your center of gravity is much lower — so cornering isn’t a problem.

This is quite common among ADV riders. My dad enjoys sta nding on rides as well (on his KLR 650) , particularly on gravel roads. The main practical purpose is that it provides excellent low speed control of the bike and dramatically increases the ability to manage low traction situations. Also like @benjrblant said, its quite comfortable and keeps you f ro m getting sore on long rides.

There was a guy I used to see all the time in the southern half of the state, mostly on route 7, but he was all over down south... Anyway we referred to him as “Stand-up Motorcycle Guy” Almost anyone who drove route 7 regularly knew who you ment immediately. He had an older Goldwing, and was always seen standing. I saw him standing and balancing in stop and go traffic in Rutland. Never sat, never put a foot down. Always. Standing. In the summer he would ride in shorts and flip-flops (and a full face-helmet) with no shirt. Always standing. I have no idea why.

Your hypothesis on farting is off. The seat is irrelevant, it’s more the attire that’s important.

The moto-farting experiences varies widely, depending on if you’re wearing a full leather race suit / a full ADV suit / jeans & assless chaps / gym shorts & flippy floppies.

This guy was simply stretching.

Unless you have a good and expensive aftermarket seat, most bike seats will get uncomfortable within 30 minutes or so.

That’s better than this one dweeb I saw on the freeway a couple of months ago. The road has several (gentle) curves in one section where you don’t really need to lean the bike much to go through them. Yet every curve this guy would shift his body over and stick a knee out like he was chasing Marquez through the last turn before the checkered flag.
